Making Art That Sells Week 3: Children's Books
For week 3 Making Art That Sells our focus for the week was children's books. I love illustrating for children's books it's fun and exciting. I also love collecting and reading children's books. Our assignment was to read Hans Christian Andersen "The Snail & The Rose Tree" and illustrate a cover or a spread for it with lettering. I never heard of this book before and I did enjoy reading it. I actually had to read it several times to get a better understanding of the story to visualize it. If you haven't read this story before it's a good read and recommend it.
Overall I enjoyed this assignment while I guess have been enjoying each assignment and the inspiration given to us during this course. I get excited when Mondays roll around now to found out what's in store for us. When the course is over I'm going to start making assignments for myself each week it's fun and challenging.

Home Decor: Plate Design Assignment
Our class assignment this week for class was to create a plate design for a client in mind like Crate & Barrel, West Elm & Anthropologie. I love these stores and would love to freelance for them someday! I use to work for Crate & Barrel when I was in college yeeeeears ago I was a Sales Associate there for about year and half.
The theme of the class assignment was pods and succulent. I never thought about drawing this form of plant before it was fun researching it and finding inspiration. At the beginning of the week I pulled out my watercolor, gouache, colored pencils and pens because looking around on Athropologie website at their plate designs inspired me to start creating some traditional pieces. I sketched and practiced for a little bit. I scanned it in and colored it in Illustrator. One of my goals for the future is to sketch and color everything by hand. When doing everything by hand you make a mistake you have start all over again. I know in time I will get better with practice.

The lesson for last week was Bolt Fabric and we were assigned to create icons with a kitchen Pyrex and casserole theme. I had so much fun brainstorming and sketching mushrooms casserole dishes and veggies. I'm really looking forward to this week 2 and the other weeks to come.
